One Year Later, IU Vigil Remembers Joseph Smedley

One year after Indiana University student Joseph Smedley was found dead after he was missing for five days, his sister joined IU students, faculty and staff at the Neal-Marshall Black Culture Center for a vigil in his memory.

The Monroe County Coroner ruled Smedley's drowning death a suicide, but Smedley's sister Vivianne believes the Bloomington Police Department should investigate his death as a homicide.

Vivianne cites a second autopsy report she requested from a third party, which she says revealed evidence her brother could have been held under water, resulting in his death.

She is raising money to hire a private investigator to look into the death further. Wednesday's vigil also served as a platform for Vivianne to garner support for her mission to further investigate the death.
