With less than a week until several properties are auctioned off in Nashville, the town council voted unanimously to beef up an existing zoning ordinance relating to historic structures.
The changes include adding an extensive review process before any buildings older than 50 years can be demolished.
It also increases permit costs and fines for violations.
“If they (property owners) bypass the permitting process they can be fined 2,500 dollars a day for up to 180 days,” says Town Council President Jane Gore.
The 16 buildings up for auction were once owned by Andy Rogers, who passed away last year. Business owners were concerned about the future of those buildings once the owners changed hands.
“I was mainly concerned about all the shops on Antique Alley, they are a little rustic, they do need a little sprucing up, but the idea of someone coming in and tearing them all down would be devastating,” said Sally Baldwin, owner of the Brown County Weavery.
The auction is Wednesday October 30 th, at the Brown County Historical Society.
