A bill that would require all-terrain vehicle drivers and child passengers to wear helmets passed out of committee Wednesday.
Some lawmakers expressed concerns about how the bill would be enforced, but Representative Llyod Arnold, R-Huntingburg, says his proposal aims to increase awareness.
"They're great, they're fun to ride, they're a good tool for people to use, we just want people to be safe when they are using them," Arnold says.
The bill comes after the Indiana Department of Natural Resources saw a record number of ATV deaths in 2016.
Ashley Bruggenschmidt testified in favor of the measure. Her daughter wasn't wearing a helmet when she died in an ATV accident in 2015.
"It tipped over on my daughter Kate and killed her instantly from blunt force trauma, massive cerebral disruption to her head," Bruggenschmidt says.
The bill goes before the full House next week.
