Common Cause Indiana, the League of Women Voters Indianapolis, and member groups of the Indiana Coalition for Independent Redistricting are holding a rally Monday at noon outside of the statehouse to seek redistricting reformation.
Sunday, the League of Women Voters of Bloomington-Monroe County held an event they called the Gerrymander Meander.
Gerrymandering refers to a political practice in which voting districts are redrawn to favor a political party.
Walkers gathered at Childs Elementary School, and followed a nearly two mile route along lines that separate three districts on the south-east side of Bloomington.
Elaine Gaul is a member of the committee that organized the event for the League of Women Voters. Gaul says the group is trying to gather support for a non-partisan commission to look at redistricting.
"I think when you get people out of the house and you get them actually doing something, maybe things assume a little more importance," Gaul says.
Julia Vaughn is the policy director for Common Cause Indiana. She spoke to the crowd following the walk.
"You've got some work to do here in Bloomington," Vaughn says. "You've got all these legislators from all over the place with little sections of Monroe County, but we need you reaching out to them and saying we expect your support of redistricting reform."
Four bills addressing redistricting were introduced to the State Legislature this year, but none made it to the Governor's desk.
