Gov. Eric Holcomb made his way to southern Indiana Monday to do a ceremonial signing of HEA 1200. The legislation known as "Kate's Law" or the "Play For Kate Bill" requires anyone under the age of 18 to wear a helmet when riding an all-terrain vehicle, or ATV.

Ashlee Bruggenschmidt began pushing for the helmet legislation after her daughter Kate died in an ATV accident in 2015. Legislators who backed the law say the law is about creating safety awareness.
According to the Indiana DNR Law Enforcement Facebook page, hundreds of local residents along with state representatives and senators attended the event, which took place at Sharon Elementary School in Newburgh. Bruggenschmidt is the principal of the school.
The Indiana Department of Natural Resources says 2016 marked the deadliest year on record for ATV accidents and that officials are ramping up awareness efforts.
