Indiana Department of Transportation officials are beginning survey work on the final leg of the I-69 expansion. Section 6 of the expansion will follow along State Road 37 between Martinsville and Indianapolis.
INDOT Public Involvement Specialist LaMar Holliday says workers are surveying wetlands, streams and other environmental features to further refine and analyze the expansion plan.
Holliday says the Federal Highway Administration will release a Final Environmental Impact Statement and record of decision for Section 6 in spring of 2018.
"Once we receive those two documents, we will then be able to schedule out other parts of the project, which includes design, the acquisition and relocation phase, and then eventually the start of construction," Holliday says.
Sections 1 through 4 of the expansion have been completed since 2015.
Section 5 between Bloomington and Martinsville was originally scheduled to be complete in October of last year. But construction has experienced a series of delays, including issues with funding, and is now expected to be complete in 2018.
