Terre Haute Leaders Make Case To State Senate In Favor Of Casino

The future of a casino in Terre Haute is still a gamble.

Community leaders spoke to the Indiana State Senate Wednesday about the future of Senate Bill 354, which would place unused machines from the Rising Sun casino to a new facility in Terre Haute.

Opponents of the bill say a new casino will decrease revenue and steal competition from existing casinos around the state.

Terre Haute City Councilman Orville Elliot says that won't be the case.

"Residents in our community traveling to Evansville, French Lick, Shelbyville, Anderson require lengthy drives of at least wo hours," Elliot says. "I believe that gambling revenue will actually increase if it's more convenient to our portion of the state."

Those in favor of the bill say they believe a Terre Haute casino will also draw in revenue from casino goers coming from Illinois.
