Lieutenant Governor Suzanne Crouch's trip to Bloomington's Hoosier Hills Food Bank Friday aimed to bring awareness of food insecurity across the state.
Crouch toured the facilities and met with volunteers. She says food banks like Hoosier Hills that have a private-public partnership to supply their donations help save taxpayers money while still accomplishing their mission.
"They receive some state and some federal funds, but they rely on the public for so many of their donations, so they need just a little help from us then the rest the community does," Crouch says.
Hoosier Hills Executive Director Julio Alonso says it's important to bring state officials to the food bank to show them how their support directly affects the people they serve.
"There are organizations out here trying to fight hunger, and that those problems do exist," Alonso says.
Crouch says that she could see increased financial support in the future from the state for food banks like Hoosier Hills.
