USDA issued waivers allowing states to reopen the summer seamless option and summer food service program because of the pandemic. This allows schools in Indiana to serve free breakfast and lunch to all students from September 14th through the end of 2020.

Annie Eakin is the Community Wellness Coordinator for the Purdue Extension Nutrition Program.

"It’s just another way to make more connections with kids to get them healthy food delivered or available to them over school year and not just summer now,” Eakin said.

School districts need to apply for these programs and once they make contact with the Department of Education, they work with them to determine which option is best.

“It just eliminates the barrier of the stigma of having free and reduced lunches for all kids," she said.

Contact your school district to see if this option is available.
