Baxter International recently announced an agreement with Moderna to fill and finish its COVID-19 vaccine in Bloomington.
Baxter BioPharma Solutions is expected to produce 60-90 million doses of the vaccine at its manufacturing facilities on South Curry Pike by the end of this year.
Fill and finish, or "fill/finish," is a pharmaceutical term used to describe the process of filling vials with a vaccine and packaging the vials for distribution.
Baxter is the second facility in Bloomington to produce a vaccine. Catalent is producing both the Moderna and Johnson & Johnson variations.
“Bloomington offers a range of production and commercialization services, including clinical development, formulation, packaging and commercial launch capabilities,” the company said in a press release.
Baxter BioPharma Solutions is a contract manufacturing organization specializing in injectable pharmaceuticals. With over 700 employees, the company has operated in Bloomington for approximately 20 years.
“Baxter is honored to provide our deep expertise in vaccine manufacturing to help partners like Moderna bolster the supply of their vaccine,” Baxter BioPharma Solutions Vice President Marie Keeley said in the press release.
