The Monroe County Commissioners on Wednesday approved an advisory board to look at redrawing local precinct boundaries.
The bi-partisan precinct and district boundary advisory commission will use 2020 census data to redraw local election lines. The four appointed community members are:
- Hal Turner- Republican, appointee to the Monroe County Election Board
- Joyce Poling- Republican, assistant to the chancellor for community engagement at Ivy Tech, former Monroe County Commissioner elected in 1989
- Ed Roberston- Democrat, deputy chair of headquarters for the Monroe County Democratic Party
- Regina Moore- Democrat, City of Bloomington clerk 2000-2015
Changes in precinct maps could mean a change in Bloomington City Council districts next year. As a result, this could affect the 2023 election.
“This is such an important project,” commissioner Julie Thomas said. “It’s something that we know will require a great deal of time and attention to detail, and that is going to be an important part of the future of Monroe County.”
County attorney Jeff Cockerill said the commission will work on a compressed timeline due to delayed census result. He spoke with an attorney at the Indianan Election Division, who said the state needs an initial update from the commission by Oct. 15.
