Alexander Memorial revealed after decade-long effort

Restorations on the Alexander Memorial Monument are complete after thousands of dollars in repairs and years of planning. Monroe County officials unveiled the restored statue before the Fourth of July parade Monday.

The monument honors Monroe County veterans.

“Its been an uphill battle, but we got there and we’re just very proud that it looks as beautiful as it does,” said Mary Elftman, co-chair of the Alexander Memorial Committee.

Decades ago, the memorial was cleaned with concentrated acid, resulting in a degeneration of the figures on the statue over time.

Elftman says the project took more than 10 years to complete.
