Two killed in head-on collision on State Road 37 south of Bloomington

Two people were killed in a head-on collision at the intersection of State Road 37 and Zikes Road Monday afternoon.

Monroe County Sheriff’s deputies arrived on the scene at 3:16 p.m. and discovered both drivers trapped in their vehicles, according to a press release. There were no passengers in either vehicle.

IU Health Lifeline Service and Monroe Fire Protection administered emergency care, but both drivers were pronounced dead on the scene by the Monroe County Coroner’s Office.

According to witnesses and accident reconstruction, a white van traveling south on State Road 37 driven by Darra Jones, 42, Bedford, signaled right, but “suddenly veered left, crossing the median.” It then struck a black van traveling north on State Road 37 driven by Brian Hersley, 47, Westport.

The crash caused the closure of the northbound lane of State Road 37 for more than an hour.
