Boston Scientific Primed For Spencer Expansion

An International medical device company will add hundreds of jobs to Owen County as part of its expansion plans.

The Spencer Town Council unanimously approved a 20-year tax abatement for Boston Scientific earlier this month, doubling the company’s occupied square footage.

The abatement stipulates Boston Scientific must hire an additional 350 employees, bringing the company’s total number to 1,400 after the renovations are complete at its current facility.

After the expected hires, Boston Scientific will be the largest employer in town.

Town Attorney Richard Lorenz says Spencer faced stiff competition for the investment, including from cities in Scotland and Malaysia. Spencer beat them all, and Lorenz says the town is excited to further its partnership with the medical device maker.

"I think the Town of Spencer is very pleased that this particular employer—which is international in scope—has dedicated itself to staying in a small-town community and contributing to the community."

Lorenz says renovations are expected to happen next year with the first new hires arriving shortly after.
