The Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles is now offering free access to driver records online.
Previously, the BMV charged $4 for people to look at their driver records online, with an eight dollar charge for a certified copy of those records. As of Wednesday, access to those records is now free of charge, and a certified copy is $4.
BMV Deputy Commissioner Dennis Rosebrough says the loss of money is offset by the amount of time the bureau will save by not having to process as many records requests.
"At the end of the day," he said, "it really was not a monetary consideration, either in the positive or the negative sense. It really was focused on customer service."
Rosebrough says one of the key features of the online records is the ability to check reinstatement requirements for a driver whose license has been suspended. The records are available online at Bureau of Motor Vehicles.
