The College of Arts and Sciences at Indiana University is removing unremittable fees for graduate students.
The fees cover a variety of tuition costs and total about $1,100 a year.
IU spokesperson Chuck Carney says that many grad students are working as teaching assistants or doing lab work for the university.
He says that’s one of the things a task force in the College of Arts and Sciences studied when determining whether to eliminate the fees.
“These are important parts of Indiana University and so we want to make sure that they’re able to successfully navigate this as well as possible," Carney says.
The Indiana Graduate Workers Coalition says IU is the only school in Big Ten that requires students to pay unremittable fees.
Carney says many students raise concerns about education costs and there are always discussions about making sure that the IU’s fees are equitable to everyone.
“The number one thing is that we want students to come here and be able to succeed and not feel like they’re being hampered by additional fees that are being put upon them so we try to make sure we’re being fair with that," he says.
The fees will be eliminated only for grad students in the College of Arts and Sciences starting in Fall 2020.
