Blast At Marion GM Plant Kills One, Injures Five

After General Motors recalled another seven million vehicles Monday, officials at a GM metal-stamping plant in Marion announced a chemical explosion Tuesday killed a contractor and injured five other people.

Marion Mayor Wayne Seybold said the incident is a tragic accident.

"We've actually had their safety people train us how to be safer and have a safer work environment many years ago," Seybold said.

"So I know they hold that in high regard, obviously, but it's just a sad day when someone loses their life in your community in a tragic accident."

The explosion involved a chlorine dioxide tank.

A hazardous materials crew contained material that spilled due to the blast, and firefighters rinsed the skin of everyone who potentially contacted the chemical.
