White River Valley Hosts First Greene County HS Soccer Team

A co-ed high school soccer team in Greene County is making history. It's the first time soccer has ever been offered at any school in the county.

Coach Matt Settles stands on the sidelines and watches as his players move the ball up and down the field. Many of these kids have never before played the game.

"It's been a tough and a very long process but it's happening and it's exciting to see that the soccer team is actually going to happen. This is the first time there's ever been high school soccer anywhere in Greene County," he says.

Sophomore Bridget Francis says when she found out soccer was coming to White River Valley, she broke down a little.

"It kind of brought me to tears. Because I've played since I was three in county league and travel teams so having it at my school and practically my second home makes it such a big deal for me and I can't wait for the season."

There are 10 boys and 5 girls on the team. The school doesn't have enough players for just a boys or just a girls team.

At practice, they all do the same thing and the expectations are no different for the girls than the boys. And they'll be playing against other boys teams throughout the state.

The first of those games is Friday, August 22 in Evansville. And the team's first home game is September 11.
