Bloomington City Council Changes Parking Meter Times

Bloomington city council Wednesday night saw two separate, but similar, ordinances that would change parking policies downtown.

Only one passed and was voted for unanimously.

This ordinance changes parking meter enforcement times from 8 a.m. until 10 p.m. to 9 a.m. until 9 p.m.

Some council members saw this as an opportunity to give anyone dining or visiting downtown for shows a way to worry less about parking issues.

These changes are a response to a study completed last year on what residents thought of the meter regulations.

Council members amended the ordinance to include a special exception of reserving parking spaces for Middle Way House. Some members thought allowing special reservations on street parking specifically for those clients would be safer.

One change that failed was a proposed elimination of the credit card convenience fee each time a person pays without cash.

The ordinance also gives the mayor authority to declare "parking holidays."

The meters were estimated to bring in over $3.1 million in additional revenue.
