Those walking on the Indiana University campus might hear a familiar tune ringing from the Student Building on Friday evening.
The sound of "Hail To Old IU" will chime across the Old Crescent weekly at 6 p.m., at the request of IU President Michael McRobbie.
The chime was first put into the Student Building in 1906, but the bells were damaged in 1990 in a fire.
McRobbie asked IU's curator of organs and carillons David Kazmir to bring back the tradition of playing the school's alma mater after he spoke with an alumnus who recalled the memory from his time at the university.
"There's something very nice about hearing bells in the distance on a campus," Kazimir says. "And one of the wonderful things about President McRobbie is that he likes to see tradition celebrated on our campus."
Kazimir says he plans to work with a small group of students from the Jacobs School of Music, the Kelley School of Business and the College of Arts and Sciences who will share the weekly performance duty.
