The Indiana University Student Government has surveyed IU Bloomington students, faculty and staff members about electric scooters on campus.
The Scooter Data Collection Project consisted of five multiple choice questions and one optional write-in question about scooter safety risks, importance, affordability and comparisons with other transportation methods.
IU Student Body President Isabel Mishkin says 458 of the 529 responses came from students, and 71 from faculty and staff. She said the responses are being used for a recommendation to the Indiana University Board of Trustees on how to handle the scooter issue.
“The first recommendation that we made was that the board should not ban scooters on all Indiana University campuses," Mishkin says.
IUSG also recommended that there should be delegated responsibility to campuses to adapt to scooters.
Safety and injury concerns were raised. But Mishkin says that banning scooters will take away from economic opportunities and college affordability to students.
“What we overwhelmingly found is two-thirds of the students said ‘yes’ the scooters make college more affordable," she says.
IU Student Government representatives will present the findings to the Board of Trustees in December.
