Early Voting Underway For 2015 Bloomington Muncipal Election

Early voting is underway in Bloomington, and Monroe County elections officials say they're hoping for voter turnout in the double digits for this year's municipal election.

Monroe County Elections Supervisor Tressia Martin says more than 200 people have already voted since early voting opened on Monday.

"More people are coming in groups, and they're not as staggered as in the primary," Martin says.

She says that's because there are fewer days for early voting in this election.

"I'm hoping that we have 1,600 people who early vote," she adds. "More people always show up for the general than the primary."

Martin says officials typically see a solid turnout in early voting.

"It's convenient for people to come on their lunch hour or after work," she says.

And while Martin would like to see 100 percent voter turnout in this election, she says her office is realistically aiming for a rate around 30 percent. A mere 5.5 percent of voters cast a ballot in May's primary election.

In the 2012 general election, 60.4 percent of voters showed up the polls, and in 2010, nearly 40 percent voted.

Bloomington voters who want to vote by mail must submit an application by 12 p.m. on Oct. 26. Voters can also submit an application to vote absentee by travel board.
