Governor Announces Section Of I-65 Will Be Widened

Gov. Mike Pence announced plans Tuesday to widen Interstate 65 in Lake County.

The governor says crews will widen the interstate to three lanes in each direction from Merrillville south to "at least State Road 2 near Lowell."

Pence says the widening project is part of the Major Moves 2020 program.

The budget for the widening project is $70 million. The governor's office says those funds will come from the Major Moves 2020 program, though the Indiana Department of Transportation will seek state budget committee approval for use of those funds.

"[T]oday's announcement to expand Interstate 65 is another positive step in our efforts to ensure that our transportation infrastructure can support the economic and employment growth our state has seen over the last decade. Hoosiers can rest assured that my administration will continue to prioritize our roads and bridges in a responsible and aggressive manner," the governor said in a statement.

Transportation infrastructure has been widely discussed in recent months after the governor and state Democrats each unveiled new transportation funding proposals.
