Watermelon Drop Will Be State's First Bicentennial Event

The city of Vincennes' annual New Year's Eve watermelon drop will serve as the state's first 2016 Bicentennial event.

The city has rung in the new year with the tradition since 2008. More than a dozen watermelons will drop onto a "splatform" at the stroke of midnight.

"We raise a 18-foot long by 12-and-a-half-foot wide watermelon about 85 foot in the air and then 16 locally-grown Indiana watermelons will be dropped," says Rick Linenburg, one of the founding members of the National Watermelon Drop Committee.

The drop will be followed by fireworks and an air show featuring more than ten planes flying over the Wabash River.
