The Indiana State Health Department is reporting the state's first flu death of the season, although overall flu activity is minimal.
Epidemiologist Sara Hallyburton says getting a vaccine is the best way to prevent infection.
"Typically the flu season will peak in January but it could be later," Hallyburton says. "The influenza vaccine takes about two weeks to become effective."
Hallyburton expects more flu deaths as the season continues. She says Hoosiers should wash their hands often and stay home when sick.
The Indiana State Health Department says to follow the three C's: cover your mouth, clean your hands, and contain your germs by staying home when ill.
