Indiana University says 17 sexual misconduct hearings conducted under a former administrator accused of sexual assault were handled fairly. The university reviewed the cases after Director of Student Ethics Jason Casares resigned in February.
A colleague at the Association for Student Conduct Administration accused Casares of sexually assaulting her at a conference in December. Casares' attorney said at the time his client denied the allegations.
Indiana University promised a thorough review of all sexual misconduct cases Casares was involved in this academic year.
IU freshman Hailey Rial filed a Title IX complaint alleging the university mishandled her sexual assault case by allowing Casares to oversee the process.
IU Law Professor Julia Lamber examined the files and audio from 17 cases. She also interviewed the two other panelists who oversaw the process.
The panelists say Casares never pressured them into taking a certain position and always sought their opinions before declaring his own.
Lamber determined the cases were reviewed fairly and without bias. The university now considers the decisions in the cases final.
