President of the Indiana University system Michael McRobbie is the fifth-highest paid public college or university president, according to an annual report from the Chronicle of Higher Education.
The report, released Wednesday, looks at compensation for presidents of public colleges and universities in fiscal year 2016.
The survey of more than 150 executives found that average total compensation increased by 5.3 percent over the previous year, to $501,000.
McRobbie's total compensation of $1,067,074 includes $600,000 in base pay, $150,000 in bonus pay and a little over $360,000 in "other." The latter includes deferred compensation, healthy life incentive, digital communication allowance, long-term disability and tax planning. Not included in the total number is $76,040 set aside for retirement.
McRobbie took the role in 2007. The Chronicle looks at salary information starting with the 2009-2010 fiscal year, during which McRobbie made a total of $425,000.
Purdue University President Mitch Daniels ranks 79th out of 239 with a total compensation of $555,829.
Ball State University had two presidents during the 2015-2016 year. Paul Ferguson served until March 2016 and ranks 116th with $448,065 in total compensation.
Indiana State University President Daniel Bradley ranks 199th with a total compensation of $315,378.
