IUPD: Vandalism Incident On Campus A Hate Crime

Indiana University police say an act of vandalism on the Bloomington campus is being deemed a hate crime.

IUPD responded to a report last week at the Frances Morgan Swain Student Building, where someone ripped an all-gender bathroom sign from the wall and attempted to write the word "MEN" underneath.

Public Information Officer Lt. Craig Munroe says that's why it's being classified as a hate crime.

"A hate crime is a crime that is motivated by a bias and there are eight classifications of bias and gender identity is one of those classifications," he says.

Munroe says vandalism on campus isn't uncommon. He says this incident is the second hate crime on campus since the start of the calendar year.

"The case will remain open," Munroe says. "Obviously, sometimes it's difficult if you don't have a witness and trying to find out who was involved. It could take some time."

The report comes after a hate crimes bill died in the Indiana Senate. Indiana is just one of five states without such a law.
