Storms Damage Muncie Fieldhouse, Spawn Possible Tornadoes

Severe storms that battered parts of Indiana damaged the Muncie Fieldhouse, caused other sporadic damage and brought some flooding.

The (Muncie) Star Press reports that part of the brick facade at the top of the Muncie Fieldhouse fell Sunday onto the roof, leaving a hole and rupturing sprinkler pipes. Muncie Mayor Dennis Tyler says "thousands of gallons of water a minute" poured inside the landmark gymnasium.

Area schools were closed Monday amid storm cleanup. The city's McKinley Neighborhood also sustained what was described as major wind and storm damage.

The National Weather Service planned to check on whether damage in Muncie and elsewhere was caused by tornadoes. At least two possible tornadoes were reported.

The National Weather Service, citing a ham radio report, reported a small tornado touched down and caused damage about 2 p.m. Sunday a few miles southeast of Portland, or about 75 miles northeast of Indianapolis.

The Jackson County Sheriff's Department reported a potential tornado blew down trees and power lines in that area about 50 miles north of Louisville, Kentucky.

Earlier, in northern Indiana, the weather service said heavy rains sent water flowing over roads in North Webster.

The severe weather also impacted the Indiana University men's basketball game Sunday afternoon.

The city of Bedford in Lawrence County has issued a city wide precautionary boil order until further notice, due to storm damage.

The Lawrence County Sheriff's Department also evacuated portions of Gas Line Rd., Tulip Lane and Washboard Rd. on Sunday due to a gas leak.
